Research Postcard Materials 2022

The Advanced Materials and Acoustics Group at the School of Engineering
led by Professor Jiawei Mi

3D atomic structures of a liquid Al-5Cu-1.5Fe-1Si alloy. The atomic structures were simulated and reconstructed using the Empirical Potential Structure Refinement method and Viper based on the synchrotron x-ray total scattering data collected in real time during the solidification of the alloy at the I12 – Joint Engineering, Environmental, and Processing Beamline of the Diamond Light Source, UK. By Mr. Shi Huang, The Advanced Materials & Acoustics Group, School of Engineering, University of Hull.

This is a synchrotron X-ray tomography taken at the ID19 – Microtomography Beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France. It was processed and rendered using the University of Hull supercomputer cluster, Viper. It shows the 3D convoluted and complex Fe-rich intermetallic phases formed in the solidification of an Al-5Cu-1.5Fe-1Si alloy.  By Mr Kang Xiang of The Advanced Materials & Acoustics Group, School of Engineering, University of Hull.
